Tell us a little about yourself and your creative practice?

I'm Chloe, the artist behind Faerytastic Oddities. My practice brings together a collection of creative interests, with a focus on creating strange, whimsical and imaginative things.

I work across different mediums and enjoy experimenting with materials, techniques, characters and objects that feel as though they could belong in another world. 

What do you create, and what drew you to this form of creativity?

I create handmade objects, characters, visual artworks and creative experiences. I particularly enjoy making things that feel like they have their own personality or story.

I've always been drawn to hands-on creativity because I enjoy taking a collection of materials and turning them into something that didn't exist before. I also like that imperfections can give a creation its own character.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

A lot of my inspiration comes from fantasy, folklore, storytelling and the strange little details around us. I'm drawn to things that feel whimsical, mysterious or unusual, and often find myself wondering what story might exist behind an object, creature, flower or place.

I'm also inspired by other artists and makers who aren't afraid to experiment and create something a little strange.

Can you tell us about your creative process?

Sometimes I start with an idea or image that I can clearly picture in my head, but don't necessarily know how to make. The process then becomes about figuring out how to bring that idea into reality.

I enjoy learning new techniques and experimenting with materials along the way. Sometimes the finished piece is different from what I originally imagined, but that's part of the fun of creating.

Is there a particular story, idea, feeling or concept that often appears in your work?

A sense of wonder appears in a lot of my work. I'm drawn to the idea that ordinary things can become a little more magical when you look at them differently.

I also enjoy creating creatures, characters and objects that feel as though they have their own story, while embracing things that are strange, unusual or a little bit weird.

What does creativity mean to you?

To me, creativity is about having an idea and giving yourself permission to figure out how to make it real. You don't have to know exactly what you're doing before you begin — sometimes learning is part of the creative process.

I also believe creativity should be accessible. You don't have to consider yourself an artist to make something, experiment with a new skill or simply try something different.

What are you currently creating, exploring or excited about?

At the moment, I'm exploring ways to turn the things I enjoy making into creative experiences that other people can participate in.

I'm particularly excited about creative workshops and take-home projects, where people can experiment with materials, learn something new and create their own version of an idea.

I'm also continuing to develop Faerytastic Oddities and see where the practice takes me next.

What would you love for audiences to experience when they engage with your work?

I would love for people to feel curious.

Whether they're looking at something I've made or creating something themselves, I want people to feel like they've discovered something a little unexpected.

Most of all, I hope my work encourages people to play, experiment and realise that they don't have to be an expert to be creative.

What is something people might not know about you or your creative practice?

This is where I'd introduce something new, rather than repeating the creative-process answer:

I'm naturally curious about how things are made, which means I'm often tempted to learn a new technique simply because I've had an idea I want to try.

A lot of my projects start with me thinking, "I wonder if I could make that?" — and then figuring it out from there.

Enchanted Companions 

Create a little creature of your own 

Somewhere between a curious creature and a tiny companion, Enchanted Companions invites you to bring a pre-made clay character to life through colour, personality and imagination. 

In this hands-on creative experience, you'll choose from a selection of Wayward Golems and Watchful Mushrooms, then paint and customise your chosen creature to create a companion that is uniquely yours. 

There is no single right way to bring your creature to life. Experiment with colour, patterns, expressions and small details to discover who your companion might become. 

What you'll create 

A hand-painted clay Wayward Golem or Watchful Mushroom, customised using your own colours and creative ideas.

The experience 

This workshop is designed to be approachable for different creative experience levels. Whether you carefully plan your creature's appearance or simply start painting and see what happens, the process is about having fun and discovering your character along the way. 

Your creature might become a woodland companion, a strange little guardian, a mischievous golem or something completely unexpected.

Magic in Motion 

Turn two images into one 

What happens when two separate pictures become one? 

Magic in Motion explores the simple optical illusion behind the thaumatrope — a small spinning device that creates the impression of two images appearing together. 

In this hands-on creative experience, you'll design and create your own thaumatrope, combining illustration, storytelling and a little bit of optical magic. 

You can create two images that belong together, transform one idea into another, or tell a tiny story through the movement between them. 

What you'll create 

Your own handmade thaumatrope, designed and illustrated by you. 

What the experience includes 

  • Materials for creating your thaumatrope  
  • Guided instructions  
  • An introduction to the illusion behind the project  
  • Illustration and design activities  
  • Creative prompts and inspiration

The experience 

You don't need to be an experienced artist to take part. The focus is on exploring how images, movement and storytelling can work together. 

As you experiment with your two sides, you'll discover how a simple piece of handmade paper engineering can create an unexpected visual effect.

Keepers of the Light 

Create your own little lantern world 

Light has a way of changing an ordinary space. Keepers of the Light invites you to create a handmade paper lantern designed to bring a little warmth, atmosphere and imagination into your surroundings. 

Using paper, colour, pattern and creative decoration, you'll build and personalise your own lantern. Your design can be simple, intricate, whimsical or completely your own. 

Whether your lantern becomes a glowing companion for your room, a little piece of atmosphere for your next gathering or simply something beautiful to display, the project is an opportunity to slow down and make something by hand. 

What you'll create 

A handmade paper lantern, decorated and personalised with your own creative design.

Keepers of the Light is about exploring what can happen when simple materials, light and imagination come together.
